Unlike perhaps any other person or organization in the large Augusta medical community, the Medical Examiner is everywhere. We visit more than 500 doctors offices at least twice a month, along with deliveries to 14 area hospitals. We see things. We have suggestions:
• University Hospital has fairly new signage at the corner of Walton Way and St. Sebastian that includes the universal red sign directing people to its Emergency Room. After dark especially, as a panicked driver heads down St. Sebastian as directed, the next red sign that comes into view will be at Harper Street, directing people to turn right to MCG’s Emergency Room. Drive it yourself sometime at night, pretending to be a panicked driver and see what you think. There is no sign at street level that identifies the entrance to University’s ED. Ambulance drivers certainly know which is which, but we wonder how many frantic drivers (or family members from the surrounding counties looking for the UH ER) never look to the left and see University’s emergency department, and instead head to MCG’s? As we have all heard a million times, in an emergency seconds count.
