Dubai seems to be the world’s showcase city for stunning architecture. But all the news about Dubai suggests it’s overbuilt, and on top of that was built with inferior materials and workmanship (not to mention slave labor). If you believe many reports, in ten years Dubai will be the world’s most lavish and spectacular ghost town. Perhaps the reports of its death are premature. If not, Dubai sure is going out in a blaze of glory.
One example: the tallest building you’re about to see, the Burj Khalifa, a 163-story tower completed in 2010, is one thousand feet taller than One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Dubai is, in a word, dazzling. If you’re an architecture fan, it’s got to be the happiest place on earth.
