Church of the Infinite Chasm

Hear those bells toll? We use silent bells, so if you don’t hear anything, it’s nothing to feel bad about. We don’t pass a collection plate either, so relax.

For any acolytes not fully up to speed on what we are, it’s simple: our credo centers around refuting evolution. In our view, there is an infinite chasm between logic and belief in evolution. There’s an old saying: For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don’t believe, no proof is possible. That maxim applies on both sides of this equation. People are generally pretty entrenched, no matter what side of the debate they’re on. That’s why sermonettes here at the C. of the I.C. aren’t heavily into FACTS. We just want you to THINK: is this logical? Does that really make sense?

Our friend Buddha said this, and these are true words of wisdom: “Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”

With Buddha’s words in mind, let’s take an honest and open-minded look at evolution. Perhaps you’ve heard the much-maligned watch argument among people who believe in creation: do you think this watch could have evolved? No? And yet you believe a far more complex human cell did? Let’s stipulate that is a flawed argument: inanimate objects cannot and do not evolve. How could they? They’re lifeless. However, let’s use the wristwatch as the launchpad for a different train of thought.

For a timepiece to function, its many intricate parts must all function more or less flawlessly. Life, in all its many forms, is the same. For example, I recently read an article in which an orthopedic surgeon explained her belief in creation by extolling the amazing design of the human knee. Mechanical engineers and materials scientists have created artificial knees that are at best limited substitutes for the real thing: these brilliant minds have designed knees that aren’t as good as the design that is said to have designed itself. Does that add up? And the best artificial knees boast a 15 or 20 year lifespan (less if you’re physically active). The knee that is said to be the product of blind chance is a better design and is more durable than the best substitute brilliant scientists can devise. Is that logical?

But let’s forget about knees for a moment. The shoulder is another mechanical masterpiece of functionality. So is the heart. The immune system is one incredible defense system. The spinal column is an amazing structure. Lungs are an astoundingly efficient machine for intake and distribution of oxygen and discharge of carbon dioxide. Kidneys have been called the most complex chemical factory on earth. And the human brain is said to be the most complex machine, device, object, computer, whatever, in the known universe.

To conclude this sermon, here’s your homework for the week: ponder the complexities and intricacies of everything in the human body (to say nothing of other forms of life), from major organs and joints to structures at the molecular and cellular level. Given their aforementioned intricacies and complexities – so much so that the best minds in science cannot duplicate or sometimes even understand their function – do you find that it stretches believability that it all evolved? The odds of a knee evolving are admittedly astronomical. What are the odds that the shoulder did too? And the ribcage? And the spine? And the nervous system? And the brain? Red and white blood cells? Lungs? Eyes? The ears and all their tiny structures to transform sound waves to electrical impulses? Taste buds? Teeth?

Is there a number that is large enough to describe those odds?
