Church of the Infinite Chasm

If you attend Church of the Infinite Chasm regularly, you know our mission statement. The gist of it is that there are several infinite chasms. One is between the teachings of creation and evolution. At the risk of stating the obvious, you can’t believe in both. Yet many people do exactly that. (So we’re wrong; you can believe in both. Just not logically.) There are Bible-believing “Christians” who subscribe to a philosophy that could be summed up as, “God created the primordial soup, and Darwin took it from there.” Apparently they ignore major chunks of their own good book, like the fact that their alleged leader (that would be Jesus) referred to Adam by name. If evolution is true, there was no Adam. If there was no Adam, there was no need for Jesus. After all, the Bible teaches that the human family inherited sin from Adam, and Jesus came to buy back or redeem what Adam lost. So to correct the previous statement, a person could believe in evolution and still claim to be a Christian, as many do. But it’s a strange brand of Christianity, indeed, that denies the need for Jesus’ sacrifice.

At any rate, introductory remarks for newbies having been written, here’s today’s food for thought, something to think about as you contemplate whether you should believe in creation or evolution. Two words: Earth’s atmosphere. The next two feet of downward scrolling would be insufficient space to extol all the virtues and capabilities of the sea above us, but here’s a very brief rundown of what our atmosphere does:
• allows us to breathe life-giving oxygen
• shields Earth from harmful UV radiation
• protects us from space debris – even boulder-sized rocks
• protects the Earth from the frozen vacuum of space, while holding in and helping to distribute warmth

It’s easy enough to shrug off this amazing biosphere as the product of evolution, but given the staggering diversity of life on Earth, evolution is obviously a smashing success. Why, then, is there no evidence of it anywhere else in the known universe, or even within our solar system? Supporters of evolution don’t say our planet offers the perfect mix of light and temperature and water and oxygen to allow life to thrive in a million forms. That’s got it backwards, they say: all this life evolved to fit this particular habitat. Fair enough. So where is all the life that evolved to fit the moon’s environment? And that should be thriving on Mars and Venus and Saturn?

Why is the Earth’s atmosphere utterly unique? Why, if evolution is true, and is so successful here, is there virtually no evidence of it anywhere else? Here’s the easy answer: the universe is so vast, there has to be a million more Earths out there somewhere, teeming with life. That’s easy enough to say. It seems logical. But where is the scientific proof?
