Complexity is the new simplicity.

Meaning what, exactly? The sheer complexity of the natural world leads to an inescapable conclusion: the more complex a structure or event, the less likely it is to occur by chance. That’s just common sense.

But when someone uses the word “unlikely” to describe evolution, just how unlikely is it?

The famous double helix

The famous double helix

Let’s take DNA as an example, a molecule containing genetic blueprints that’s so complex that it’s unlikely anyone who isn’t a molecular biologist can even begin to grasp its sophistication and complexity. There are myriad chemical reactions that need to be precisely staged in sequence to form DNA, the very building block of life.

About 40 years ago a Utah State University scientist (Dr. Frank Salisbury) calculated the odds of the spontaneous generation of a basic DNA molecule by natural chemical reaction. His model stipulated the cosmic laboratory as 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 hospitable planets (that’s 10 to the 20th power) and gave the experiment 4 billion years to take place. Even given those vast parameters, the chances that a single DNA molecule could form by naturally occurring chemical reactions was 10 to the 415th power.

If that isn’t an infinite chasm, nothing is.

Biochemist Michael Denton, a proponent of Intelligent Design, has written that “the meaning of the genetic code is also virtually identical in all cells. The size, structure and component design of the protein synthetic machinery is practically the same in all cells. In terms of their basic biochemical design, therefore, no living system can be thought of as being primitive or ancestral with respect to any other system, nor is there the slightest empirical hint of an evolutionary sequence among all the incredibly diverse cells on earth.”

It’s not cool for scientists to say they believe in a creator. Instead many believe in Intelligent Design. Random chance isn’t intelligent, so when you get right down to it, Intelligent Design is just labspeak for God.
