I LOVE MONDAY

XZbjEXyWhen it comes to things to love on a Monday (or any other day), random acts of kindness have to be near the top of the list. When a complete stranger – strike that – a perfect stranger does something kind, it’s profound beyond any connection to the act itself. I remember once, on Augusta’s legendary Tobacco Road, I made a mid-morning stop at a restaurant’s drive-thru window. My order was minor, a cup of coffee and a sausage biscuit if I recall. I got the standard, “That’ll be x dollars, please pull forward.” I eased up behind another car at the pick-up window to pay and get my food. When I did, the girl just handed me the food and said, “There you go.” I reminded her I still had to pay. She gestured in the direction of the car that had just driven off and said, “They paid for your order.” She had no idea who they were, and neither did I. It took less than two dollars to make my day, probably the payer’s, and the girl at the window too.

Not that it costs money to be kind. I often see someone trying to leave a business that’s near an intersection. Some drivers kindly stop to let the other car out, others act like they’re being towed by the car ahead of them, so close do they stay to the bumper of the car ahead. They are not about to let someone in ahead of them. But it often takes nothing more than a few seconds of our time and less than a penny to show a simple act of kindness to another person.
