I hope you’ll read at least this issue’s cover story. It contains a message we all need to read. On June 1, three boys were killed in a violent collision that police say happened when both vehicles involved ran a red light. With all the publicity that surrounded this tragic event (it can’t really be called an accident), one would think red-light-runners would get a serious wake-up call. One would be wrong. Just yesterday I saw a black pickup truck approach Furys Ferry Road on The Pass as the light turned yellow. He was far enough back to stop easily. He was far enough back that when he entered the intersection to turn left, the light was already red and had been for maybe a full second. Apparently he was too busy or too important to be bothered by a red light. That’s exactly the kind of thinking that killed three children, and it seems to be growing. If you’re a safe driver but are the first person through an intersection on a fresh green, you could be the next victim. Yes, it’s an issue for everyone. Maybe our page one article will help prevent the next senseless tragedy.
