See wht it would be like in Gust if we cn’t “Save the A”?
Rumor has it that today’s visit of the Governor to our fair city could bring with it news of a GHSU name compromise – or even the abandonment of Georgia Regents University, the most unpopular name since Adolph (if not Judas). If the rumors are true, the Medical Examiner can be restored to its proper spelling. And Georgia Regents University can be placed in a biohazard bag and properly disposed of. Our sentiments reflect no dislike or disrespect of the Board of Regents or opposition to the merger itself. In fact, courtesy of Dr. Ricardo Azziz, the Regents were led down the path to this name by the direct advocacy of Azziz. They were carefully steered away from any name that included Augusta. As a result, they never saw the results of the $50,000.00 marketing survey or any other evidence of public opinion [that we were all repeatedly urged to submit], all of which was in favor of University of Augusta and its related variations. For his part, Dr. Azziz continues to do his imitation of Pontius Pilate, washing his hands of any involvement in the decision in the face of all the factual evidence to the contrary. The South hasn’t seen anything like this since the days of Stonewall Jackson. It’s a shame: Azziz was selected for this post over many other candidates after a nationwide search. He has to be a capable administrator. Unfortunately however, he is currently Pariah #1 in this corner of the world by a wide margin over whoever is in second place. It’s hard to imagine him being able to restore his reputation and standing in this community regardless of what happens today. If Augustans were polled today or tomorrow, Azziz is one A that very few people would want to save.
