What do you think is the most lethal creature on this planet? Ok sure, that’s a no-brainer: human beings. But other than people, what do you think is the most dangerous threat to life, the deadliest and most medically significant plant, insect or animal?
Check out this quote excerpted from the website of the Michigan Mosquito Control Association:
Mosquitoes are by far the most dangerous animals on earth. It is hard to comprehend the amount of disease and the resulting sickness, death, and economic loss caused by the mosquito. Some scientists estimate between 500 and 700 million people get malaria worldwide each year. That’s more than twice the entire population of the United States each year.
Malaria has been virtually eliminated in the US, but the threat of mosquito-borne disease is still very real. Many are known to be vectors (carriers or transporters) of important diseases such as West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, and the California Group of encephalitis. Mosquitoes are the most medically important insects in the world.
What can you do about this threat? In the current issue of the Medical Examiner (scroll down to read the digital version posted April 19), Columbia County EMA director Pam Tucker offers a number of important steps we should all take in our yards and neighborhoods (see pages 2 and 3).
Incidentally, today is World Malaria Day 2013.
