CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATES!

Now the hard part begins.

As we speak, high school graduates all over Augusta and across the fruited plains are engaging in some well-deserved celebrations. A milestone of life has been achieved! Way to go!

Kids, do you want keep the celebration going? Sure you do! Here’s a tip: your diploma says you have working brain cells. Use them!

Over the years, there have been too many cases where enthusiasm and revelry got out of hand. Seriously out of hand. I remember one notable instance just a few years ago where a young man walked out of James Brown Arena in a cap and gown and was not alive to see the sun come up the following morning. Actually, I don’t think he made it to midnight. Just for fun he and some friends jumped off the railroad bridge across the Savannah River. He never came up.

Here’s a somewhat similar tale, except this kid survived. He’s got a fantastic attitude, no doubt about it, but I guarantee if he had the chance to do that night over again, there’s no way he would do it the same way a second time. He can’t change what happened. But you can learn from his mistake. I’m sure he would want that.

Have fun. Have lots of fun. Just be sure you have it in a way that lets the good times roll on into the future.
