Church is in session

Yes, the Church of the Infinite Chasm is now open. Hear those bells?

Broad-billed Hummingbird

As faithful readers know, our mission here is to demonstrate the yawning gulf between man and everything else on earth. We do this to prompt serious thought by the teeming masses who embrace evolution. With all due respect, these are intelligent, educated people who laugh at the simpletons who blindly swallow the story of life’s origins as described in the Bible. Yet these same people, for the most part, could not offer substantive proof to back up their beliefs in evolution if their very life depended upon it – which the divine creation crowd would say it does. (Side note: the vast majority of churchgoers would be just as unable to offer intelligent proof for their beliefs.) But getting back to the point of our charter and mission, if evolution is a fact, why does that infinite chasm between man and anything and everything else on this planet exist?

Even so, let’s say for the sake of argument that something simple could somehow evolve. A worm, let’s say. Even a mere worm would be a staggering accomplishment that would defy all basic principles of science. After all, there is nothing simple in the natural world. Every single cell is a marvel of sophisticated complexity. But despite it all, we have our worm. Against all odds, it is the end result of a nearly impossible set of beneficial evolutionary accidents occurring over countless eons of time.

That lowly worm would be an utterly astonishing evolutionary accomplishment. Given the virtually insurmountable odds against it, is it reasonable to believe the profusion of flora and fauna now surrounding us – much of it much more highly developed than a worm – also evolved? With each item on the following list, bring to your mind an image of each one.
Hummingbirds
Dolphins
Tulips
Cheetahs
Whales
Oak trees
Plankton
Snakes
Owls
Giraffes
Seals
Monkeys
Rhinos
Foxes
Penguins

The list could go on and on. This doesn’t even scratch the surface. Is it reasonable – and is it in keeping with the known laws of science – to believe that the amazing variety of life could evolve? Throw in all their internal systems – brain, heart, lungs, eyes, reproductive organs, and many more – and the odds become even more staggering.

Is it reasonable to believe it all came about by chance?
