I think I can prove that. And conversely, that if you do believe in evolution, you’re an outlaw. Welcome to this week’s sermonette from Church of the Infinite Chasm.
First, allow me to rip a headline from recent news near our international headquarters in Augusta, Georgia. Two months ago, a young couple,
Wesley Spires (left) and Ashley Solesbee, had been strolling along the Savannah’s Riverwalk Park on their very first date. They were sitting on a bench around 11:00 p.m. on Friday night, May 3, when they were brutally attacked and beaten with a baseball bat. Spires was the more seriously injured of the two, although both had facial fractures and head wounds. Both were hospitalized. Spires was admitted in critical condition, suffering from a fractured skull and a broken hand. He spent days in a medically induced coma and has only recently been released from the hospital to begin a lengthy process of rehabilitation.
Within days, Richmond County police arrested two 21-year-old men, Kevin Richardson and Robey Moses,
and charged them with committing the crime. The attack caused a significant drop in downtown business, a fact lamented in news reports by many small business owners, and sparked outrage and a still-active citywide debate about how to stop downtown crime. Cameras. Increased police patrols. Closing Riverwalk after dark. Social media has been lit up with thousands of hateful comments directed toward Richardson and Moses.
Here’s the point: if Darwin is right, what is the big deal??? If evolution is survival of the fittest, Richardson and Moses were merely doing what survivors are supposed to do. From a strictly Darwinian viewpoint, we should be celebrating Richardson and Moses. They embody the fittest. They symbolize strength and survival. They provide assurance that the human race will survive. On May 3, they clearly showed their superiority, and Solesbee and Spires showed their weakness. This is pure Darwinian theory. It’s Origin of Species taken off the lifeless page and into real life. Go Darwin!
Except for one thing: that’s not how civilized human beings feel. We have an innate sense of fairness and justice. Events like this cause outrage and consternation for one simple reason: deep down, the vast majority of us (I include evolutionists) do not subscribe to “survival of the fittest” in real life. In fact, when society does see someone doing whatever it takes to survive, they usually incarcerate that person.
Which do you believe? Survival of the fittest? Then you’re on the side of Richardson and Moses (should they be convicted). Or do you favor justice and human compassion?
You can’t have it both ways.
