I Hate Monday

You’re watching the national/network news, unfortunately a dying activity in itself (we’ve got Facebook and Inside Edition, after all). The anchor sitting in Los Angeles or New York introduces a story and they go to video featuring an on-the-scene interview with someone from, oh, I don’t know, Georgia, let’s say. As the person begins to very clearly articulate their story, subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen, as though the person is speaking some foreign language. What the…?

Why is it always a Southerner? Can we get subtitles when they’re interviewing somebody from the Bronx or New Jersey?
