Please watch the video below. It’s brief. It features Bill Nye, “The Science Guy,” explaining how giraffes evolved. Even if this is aimed at first-graders, it’s absolutely moronic. And, fortunately or unfortunately depending on your point of view, it’s typical of much of the “proof” that is offered in support of evolution, whether it comes from a high school dropout or a world-famous biologist or paleontologist. But at least he tried to offer an explanation; a few weeks ago we posted a scientist who said “our eyes evolved to be more receptive to blue.” Not even a pretense of proof was offered because, quite frankly, there would be none.
If we’re being fair – and we always are here at the Church of the Infinite Chasm – we have to say that the “proof” many creationists offer is just as simplistic and idiotic. In other words, not proof at all.
One of our repeated themes here is simply to be open-minded. In the final analysis, neither side can answer every question with absolute certainty. Whichever side you choose requires a measure of faith. Perhaps each of us, whether layman or scientist, can get closer to the truth by repeatedly asking the simplest of questions: “Is this explanation logical?” If it is, look into it further. But if an “explanation” just creates more thorny questions, maybe it’s time to switch to the other side – or at the very least, to investigate its evidence.
