If you’ve ever heard the term empty calories, you know the answer is yes. We take a look at this issue in pre-observance of Malnutrition Awareness Week (Sept. 28 – Oct. 2). Granted, it’s not something you think about every day, but if you do, you may realize you know someone who is malnourished: a friend, neighbor or relative who is just scraping by on a tiny budget; an elderly person whose body fat level looks like it’s about 1%. It’s an ironic but significant problem in a country where so many people are seriously overweight. And we cover a dozen or two other topics in this issue, too.
